in recent months the number of stadia have been increased and seating capacity at port elizabeth, cape town and johannesburg (soccer city) stadiums has grown to accommodate the growing interest in the event. local organisers are reporting excellent progress and the target date for hand-over to FIFA has been set for 31 october 2009.
johannesburg > soccer city stadium
the stadium will undergo a redesign and upgrade in order to host the final and opening matches, five first-round matches, one second-round match and one quarter-final tournament. featuring a new design - inspired by traditional african pottery - the revamped stadium will offer a seating capacity of 104 000.
johannesburg > ellis park stadium
this landmark in the city of gold has undergone minor upgrades and will accommodate 60 000 spectators once completed. it will host five first-round matches, one second-round and one quarter-final match.
pretoria (tshwane) > loftus versfeld stadium
located in south africa’s capital city, loftus is situated scarcely 2km from the city centre, in the tree-lined residential area of arcadia, known for its diplomatic missions and upscale hotels. with a seating capacity of 45 000, the stadium needs only undergo minor upgrades to host its share of first- and second-round matches.

eastern cape province

this purpose built, dedicated football stadium will have a seating capacity of 49 500. it will host five first-round matches, one second-round, one quarter-final and the third-place playoff from its breezy location just 2km’s of the coast, the n2 highway and the city’s hotel district.
kwa-zulu natal province
durban > king senzangakhona stadium
named after king shaka’s father, this 80 000-seat stadium is set on the balmy kzn coast – a year-round playground for locals and visitors alike. it will host six first-round matches, one second-round, and one semi-final match.
free state province
mangaung > free state stadium
also known as the ‘vodacom park stadium’, the existing facility will be upgraded with and additional tier, to be added to the main grandstand. the facility will then comply with the regulation capacity of 40 000 as it prepares to host five first-round matches and one second-round match.
mpumalanga province
nelspruit > mbombela stadium
located en-route to the world renowned kruger national park, this purpose built stadium will feature three tiers, with 40 000 seats divided between the general public, media, vip’s and FIFA representatives. after hosting four first-round matches the legacy of the event will live on as the stadium goes on to serve the local community.
limpopo province
polokwane > peter mokaba stadium
located in the culturally rich and geographically diverse limpopo province, this stadium will honour the life of its namesake and anti-apartheid activist, peter mokaba. the construction of this
45 000 stadium will produce major economic spin-off for the region through the five games set to be played here.
north west province
rustenburg > royal bafokeng sports palace
opened in 1999 and completely funded by the royal bafokeng tribe, this 40 000 seat stadium needed only minor alterations to bring it up to FIFA standards. located close the well known sun city complex, madikwe game reserve and pilansberg national park. the facility will host four first-round matches and one second-round.
